Barry Shulman, CEO of CardPlayer, won the 2009 WSOPE Championship after a heads-up play with Daniel Negreanu.
These two big names in the poker world each took their turn getting rid of one opponent after another until they were left as the last two players competing for the major prize. The game lasted about five hours, with Negreanu having a 2:1 chip lead against Shulman, but in the end, Shulman pulled ahead of Negreanu in what can be called as a very dramatic final two hands.
Shulman Talks about WSOPE
Shulman admits that he has not been playing poker that much after he purchased the CardPlayer Magazine, especially since he has already achieved what he wanted to do — to make a name for himself in the poker world. But he decided to get back into the game and work just as hard as he did ten years ago, and look where it got him — the title champion of the 2009 WSOPE and another WSOP bracelet.
When asked about the dramatic final two hands, he says that he felt a little bit like giving up when the Jack came up on the flop during the second to the last hand. He was then holding two Aces, and with the flop showing Five, Eight, and Jack, he knew he needed a lot of luck to get another Ace. But lo and behold, the river turned up an Ace.
On the last hand, Shulman had two Tens, while Negreanu was holding two Fours. Negreanu was defeated when Shulman caught his final Ten, completing his hand.
On the New Generation
Shulman remarked that his final table was his toughest table so far. When asked to elaborate on that, he confessed that there really is a big difference. During the major tournaments before, he recognizes six or seven players at a table, but with the success of Chris Moneymaker and the increased popularity of online poker, there are more players at each table, and it cannot be denied that the WSOPE attracted many poker players from all over the world, some of which may be considered as the cream of the crop.
Now, the poker world has its eye on his son, Jeff, who belongs to the November Nine 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table, and is waiting to see if the son is going to follow after his father's footstep by bagging the title and taking home the first place prize. If this happens, father and son are going to make WSOP history.
Son put the heat on father by getting into the November Nine 2009 WSOP, and father gives the heat back when he won the 2009 WSOPE.
