Get to Know the FireGoblin, Michael Overstreet

Although a relatively unknown name in the poker world, or the made his tentative splash in the poker world when he became a runner-up finisher on a $20 180-man sit and go tourney.  He admits this event to be his crowning achievement, but little did he know that he would be able to bag the WCOOP title a few months later.

A Brief History of

Overstreet's day job is being a software engineer, and although he plays poker now and then all throughout his five-year history of being a poker player, he admits to being far from becoming a poker player.  In fact, there were times that he would play continuously and times that he would have a sabbatical from the game for months.

Aside from playing poker though, he would take some time off from poker to study other games, and this proved to be very helpful for him when he joined the $109 8-Game Rotation in PokerStars.

Winning the WCOOP and Bagging a Title

Until today, when asked about his winning the WCOOP 8-Game Mixed Event, Overstreet would still blush and say that he still could not comprehend the enormity of his success.  Overstreet went up against more or less 1,800 poker players, including some members of the Team PokerStars like Chris MoneyMaker and Joe Hachem.

On an interview, he shared his secret on how he kept his composure and kept nervousness at bay.

Until today, when asked about his winning the WCOOP 8-Game Mixed Event, Overstreet would still blush and say that he still could not comprehend the enormity of his success.  Overstreet went up against more or less 1,800 poker players, including some members of the Team PokerStars like Chris MoneyMaker and Joe HachemHe says that constantly reminding himself of the fact that the WCOOP 8-Game Mixed Event is just like any other games that he has played all throughout his poker career helped him a great deal.  This thought helped him keep his A-game and not lose his head, although he admits to having the jitters all throughout the game.

Overstreet also went on to add that one should not think too much of climbing up the ladder of success, fame, and money, but one should always remember to focus on the hands he has and play it to the best of his ability.  He also encouraged other players not to get disheartened just because he has the lowest chip stacks.  In fact, he says, they should never give up.  Overstreet admitted that he had a short stack of chips during the last two tables, but he is a living proof of a poker player who has determination and knows how to keep a level head during his games enough to win the title and take home the grand total prize of $23,203.85.
