Haralobos Voulgaris Talks about Continued Aggressiveness as a Poker Strategy

Today's poker players are so much more aggressive, especially the younger players.  Because of this, you really should have a good strategy to win your poker games.

Professional poker player Haralobos Voulgaris proves that selective continued is a good strategy, as he has shown in the 2008 WSOP's Main Event.

The 2008 WSOP

The blinds were set at $100 for the small blind and $200 for the big blind, and the player situated in the middle position raised his bet to $600.  Voulgaris were given AK of hearts during the small blind, so he raised his bet to $1,600.  His opponent then called his bet. When the flop came revealing 5-9-6, two of which were diamonds, it opened up the possibility of having a flush and a straight.

For Voulgaris, that was a tricky call because he does not know if his opponent might have a set to create a flush, so he opted to lead out for $2,000, in which his opponent again called.  When the turn came, it revealed 2 of clubs.

He wanted his opponent to think that he cannot fold on a big pair of hands, so he placed a bet of $4,800 because he wanted it to look like he was committed; plus, the pot was huge.  Voulgaris would have wanted though to wager the minimum amount that would have given him the pot but not cost him a lot in case he folds, but he does not want to check and have his opponent wager $3,000, in which case he really is going to fold.

On Continued

As stated by Voulgaris, you have to be selective in your being aggressive.  This works well against poker players who think that they are the better player because it deters them from committing a bigger number of chips; that is, unless the opponent has a big hand.

Bringing continued into your games gives you control.  If you bet when you should have checked and raised when you should have called, you make other players check to you and put more money into the pot, provided that you have a good hand.  However, if you do not, then you have to make sure that you bluff your way into letting your opponents think that you have the best hand and make your opponent with a better hand than you have fold.
