You always hear the words «be unpredictable» in poker, and you know how much this can prove to be true when it comes to your games. But you should know though that you only have to change gears at appropriate times, lest your opponents see right through you.
So, when is the right time to change gears in poker?
When you notice an opponent observing you.
In a game of poker, you have to be aware of a lot of things. This most certainly includes the cards you hold, your poker tells, and your opponents' poker tells. But you also have to be aware of the fact that your opponents are also observing your every move and studying how you play the game, so you have to change gears and become less predictable since what you show could cost you a lot.
When there is a change at the table.
A change at the table occurs when new players enter the game or when you change seats or even change tables. This is as good a time as any to change gears. Not only does the slight disturbance camouflage your change in tactics, but it is also a great way to familiarize yourself in a new situation without making it obvious.
But this does not mean that you have to change gears each and every time these situations happen. Remember, you still have to employ good reasoning and right judgment before you change tactics, and you should always have a valid reason for doing so.
Obviously, you need not change your gameplay when you are in a comfortable position and the way the game is progressing is looking good for you. Changing your tactics now can be more detrimental to your game than good.
When and if you are not in a good position, this is the best time to play conservatively and tighten up, especially since your opponents are more aware of your plight. However, changing gears right now is not a good time because you need to keep your chips intact in order to stay longer in the game. Proceed with caution and only bet impressive hands.
Lastly, you should know that your emotions at the poker table can be your worst enemy, especially if you have allowed it to rule your judgment. Always keep your cool, and make sure that it does not affect the way you play your game and make a decision.
