If there is another good thing that can be said about poker tournaments is that it can benefit organizations, especially those that aim to help people, and one of the organizations that have greatly benefit from a poker tournament was Los Angeles' Children's Institute. The proceeds of the said tournament went directly to the organization's fund, which will help traumatized children.
A Quick Look at the Children's Institute
The Children's Institute, Inc. is one of Los Angeles' child services organizations that provides excellent care to traumatized children brought about by violence within their on homes and violence within their own communities. It has been helping the children of some of the city's most ravaged areas since 1906, and their services include supporting and helping these traumatized children when it comes to their healing process so as to help them recover and give them a healthier life. They not only help these children through their process of healing, but they also help them move towards a path of good opportunity and achievement as well as help them avoid tragic outcomes.
Poker for a Cause
Last Saturday, October 17, 2009, the Children's Institute, Inc. hosted its very first Annual Celebrity Poker Tournament, which was held in Los Angeles' Commerce Casino. As stated above, any profits gathered from the fundraiser will go directly to the organization's funds, which, in turn, will benefit the children who have been traumatized by violence in their homes or neighborhoods.
The host of the said poker tournament was Camryn Manheim, and the emcee was Jamie Gold. Manheim, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, is a cast of the Ghost Whisperer, and Gold is a winner of the World Series of Poker.
The first annual poker for a cause provided by Children's Institute was a success, and it saw more than a dozen celebrities, one of which is the host's costar in Ghost Whisperer, Jennifer Love Hewitt. Other celebrities who have participated in the poker tourney included Jamie Kennedy, Jennie Garth, Ricki Lake, Kevin Nealon, Allison Sweeney, Joely Fisher, and a whole lot more.
Two of the celebrities who were left standing were Kevin Rahm and Tuc Watkins along with another poker player, but it was Tuc Watkins, from Desperate Housewives, who won the tournament and bagged the grand prize.
