Poker Stories Bad Beats Calls of Courage

Poker playing and the history of poker go hand-in-hand.  Poker stories are generated every day somewhere in the world.  The story could come from a major tournament or from a weekly home game.  Many stories are about a bad beat or a miracle draw that a player pulled off or was the hapless victim of the luck of the deal. Poker stories are part and parcel of playing the game. The variables that can happen in any given hand can give such unlikely results that players can have the toes curled with the deal of a card.  Later when discussing the events of the game the players involved, in such a hand, will tell stories that are amazing in their dissimilarity.  Unless you were a witness to the hand in question you would not realize that they were discussing the same hand.  It comes down to a mater of perspective from the winner or the loser of the hand.

Bad Beats are constant grist for the mill as they are a remembered hurt.  The winner may well forget the incident.  The loser may remember the hand the rest of their life.

Watch any TV tournament and it is amazing how many bad beats one tournament can deal.  This part of the poker game takes some getting use to and the solid player shakes it off, while the emotional player goes on tilt and plays like a fool.

The other side of a Bad Beat is hands that show a Call of Courage.  Most tournaments and many cash games turn on a hand that took great courage to play.  When a call is for your tournament life, then the ability to analyze and demonstrate the courage of your convictions comes into play.  In a No-Limit cash game a player can face a moment of truth when faced with an extremely large bet.  The question is do you believe your read of the situation or do you fold.  This tipping point can be the difference between a big winning session and a big losing session.  Many top pros are put to this kind of test every time they play.  Most home players are rarely put to this type of situation where they would be hurt financially if they lose.  But we all love to watch the sweat flow on the brow of a player put in this grinder of a hand.  As an interested observer this is what makes poker the game it is to play or watch.
