Now that the 2009 Aruba Poker Classic is fast approaching and UltimateBet hosting numerous satellite tournaments where you could win a seat in APC, it is time to brush up on your satellite poker skills and strategies to make sure that you do get into the major event. Not only will it save you some money, but you also get the chance to take home a big share of the guaranteed prize pools.
Here are some strategies worth bringing into your satellite tourneys if a seat in the APC is at stake.
Know Your Goal
Of course, your goal is to win a seat, and your strategy should be geared towards getting what you want. For this reason, what you could do is to figure out how many stacks you would need at the end of the satellite tourney to get into the APC. Remember, you have to build a large stack to stay on top because, if you get the smallest stack in a 50 guaranteed seat with only, let us say for example, 55 players left, the others will be after you to take you out. What you could do then is to be aggressive when it comes to stealing the blinds. It would be wiser for you to have a stack bigger or at least the same as that of the average players' so that you will not be left defending a small stack of chips.
Focus on Your Goal
Focusing on your goal is very important. You are in a satellite tournament to win a seat in APC, not to win huge sums of money because you can do that later, but still, there are some players who forget what they are playing for. Here is a common example of this.
Again, let us use the 50 guaranteed seats where there are only 55 players left. Now, it is not uncommon to see two players who belong to the top 20 put all their money in an AK versus a QQ. This would have been okay had they been playing in a regular tournament, but this is a satellite tourney where they are both after a seat in a major poker tournament yet they forget their main goal and risked all their chips when they could have afforded not to play a hand. Remember, you do not have to be the player with the biggest stack. You only need enough to win you a seat.
